What are food sensitivities?

 

A food sensitivity occurs when you have an unpleasant but nonlife-threatening response to a certain food. Essentially, with a food sensitivity, your gastrointestinal (digestive) system struggles to process the food in question, producing troublesome symptoms. 

 

What are the signs of food sensitivities?

 

Food sensitivities can cause many disruptive issues, such as:

  • Abdominal cramping

  • Abdominal pain

  • Diarrhea

  • Constipation

  • Gas

  • Bloating

  • Nausea

The issues caused by food sensitivity generally occur within the digestive tract. Your symptoms may happen right after you eat or as long as a few hours later. 

It’s also possible that food sensitivities could cause or contribute to problems like headaches, fatigue, brain fog, weight gain, and other issues.  

 

Are food sensitivities the same as food allergies?

 

Food sensitivities and food allergies are two completely different things. With food sensitivities, your digestive system is reacting to a specific food. With food allergies, your immune system is reacting. 

Food sensitivities can be unpleasant and inconvenient, but they aren’t life-threatening. In sharp contrast, food allergies can lead to potentially deadly reactions, like anaphylaxis and anaphylactic shock.
